Hips are the key to good balance

Maintaining good hip strength is key to maintaining balance and preventing falls, a new study has found. The University of the Third Age commissioned a study into a problem that affects hundreds of thousands of people over sixty each year and has a profound impact on both quality of life and health budgets.

What were the findings?

The study analyzed five years of hospital records for patients admitted after a fall. In 80% of cases, it was found that there was a known history of hip flexibility and strength, for which they had sought medical attention.

What does this mean?

The study recommended that everyone over the age of 50 should undertake a specific strength and flexibility routine, focusing on the pelvis and hips, to avoid the onset of weakness and subsequent falls, which could lead to the level of public health risk identified in the Statistical Analysis .
